New York jury rights activists are advocating for Ross Ulbricht, the alleged creator of the Silk Road on trial, lobbying the public to learn about jury nullification, according to Voctiv.
Jury nullification occurs in a trial when a jury believes a defendant did commit the “crime” he/she is accused of, but nonetheless acquits the defendant on the belief that the “crime” shouldn’t actually be labeled as such.
Ulbricht faces allegations money laundering, drug trafficking, and attempted murder in connection with the Silk Road, a black market website that he allegedly runs.
Chaninat and Leeds’ attorneys are Thailand criminal lawyers with decades of experience defending clients’ rights in Thai courts.
DeepDotWeb reports that in addition to activists handing out flyers, there are several jury nullification ads hanging near the courthouse, paid for by The Jury Rights Project.
According to Voctiv, some activists and libertarian groups believe that Ulbricht’s convictions and subsequent trial are unjust because “simply operating a website shouldn’t land you in prison.”
